Here is what I thought the work would/could be about:
By combining footage documenting a group of activists with a YouTube video proclaiming a certain fitness ideology, Several kinds of resistance looks at strategies to relate to political or social contexts. The title quotes the YouTuber claiming that already “some kind of resistance” is better than nothing. This conviction is not only shared by most activists but also may be communicated in the same wording. Both protagonists share a passion for their cause, which in turn needs to be defined by goals and ideologies. The YouTuber claims people do too much cardio, which won’t help them to achieve results, even if they love doing it. This could be seen as a critique of the activists doing their traditional work such as handing out leaflets. However, when he later proclaims “just do something”, the comparison becomes ambivalent. Aren’t the activist “just doing something”? The work suggests that the need to actively change the current state keeps finding new means of expression, and supports new ways of resistance.
///Doesn't work, can't fix it is an ongoing series of art works that just don't work. (The name is the game.)
